HANDSPINNERS' FLEECES
Our fleeces include a range of white, gray, brown and black fleeces in the Thirteen Mile flock, including a variety of Border Leicester, Corriedale, Romeldale, Blue-faced Leicester and Lincoln genetics. We have a few Navajo Churro as well.
Our 2008 shearing was on February 19th, on the first really clear and warm day of the year. We had two excellent local shearers, who did a fantastic job. That, combined with a wonderful support crew, and heavy snows earlier in the winter which helped make clean and long wool, made for one of best shearing days ever.
We've selected some of the nicer fleeces and photographed them below. A six-inch rule is included for scale. We understand that a photo isn't the same as touch; please select a few of the fleeces that you're interested in and we'll send out samples at no charge. Making sample cards for ALL the fleeces in the photos was becoming unwieldy for numerous requests, so we hope that photos combined with selected samples will provide the information you need. Let us know if there are specific characteristics you're looking for; we'll try to make the best match we can.
We have chosen not to put coats on our sheep, partly because it seems impractical and risky to manage coats on a few hundred sheep, and I know I don't want to wear a windbreaker 24-7, why would they? Nonetheless, we have been honored when several of our customers have asked if we coat our sheep. "They're so clean?!"
Despite our efforts toward clean fleeces, there are always some mischievous young ewes who crawl under the hay, or some other unforeseen farm fiasco that causes less-than-perfect fleece. Every fleece is laid out and examined before shipping; we won't sell it to you at the full price unless it deserves it. Fleece weights range from 6-13 pounds. You will be notified of the weight and charged accordingly.
If you'd like to have us wash and card your selected fleece, we can do that right here in our mill (see wool processing page). You can request plain washed wool, or have it carded into roving or batts.
