lambs on pasture

Thirteen Mile is no longer selling lamb since we sold our main flock to Rich and Katy Harjes of Willow Spring Ranch. Rich and Katy share our convictions about the value of grassfed, organic lamb, and about learning to live with wildlife, including carnivores. Their ranch is about 6 miles from Thirteen Mile Farm and shares the calcium rich soils and microclimate of this portion of the Gallatin Valley, so you can still buy tasty tender lamb through Willow Spring.

We have recently relaunched a new sheep flock here at Thirteen Mile; the lamb will be marketed through Willowspring, and we will continue to process and market the wool from both ranches at our mill. While our new flock is still small, we have extra grass, so we are leasing pasture to both Willowspring lambs and our neighbor's organic, grassfed cattle (C-5 Organics). This arrangement will allow us to focus on developing breedstock for the Harjes and others, working toward locally-adapted, high quality grassfed meat animals with beautiful wool. We're grateful for the opportunity to experiment more systematically than we have in the past with some specific crossbred genetics. We'll be working toward the type of seedstock we wished we could find when we started raising sheep over twenty years ago. This collaboration will also help extend the season for lamb marketing by Willowspring, since our slightly lower elevation and earlier snowmelt allows us to start lambing sooner in the spring. Like a good wine, this lamb reflects the land it grows on, and we're happy to see this corner of the Gallatin Valley produce more.
